What’s a waist trainer?
A waist trainer is essentially a modern form of a corset. You’ll often see the word “corset” used interchangeably with “trainer”. These products are designed to enhance a woman’s hourglass figure, squeezing the tummy area in and lifting the chest.

What are the differences between trainers, cinchers, and trimmers?
Of the three products in the “trainer” category, the waist trainer or corset is the largest and most restrictive. It provides a full boost of your figure from hips to bust. Trainers fit over your hip bones, and extend all the way up your chest to help push your bust up.
To keep their shape, trainers usually have “ribs” inside, just like corsets in the old days. However, new models use steel ribs instead of bones. Steel is safer, since it’s much less likely to break.
Trainers are ideal for people who are looking for something to fit under a dress, or formal wear. They provide the most complete figure adjustment, and they’re easier to hide under clothing. They also provide the most noticeable training results, since they’re very firm. The only downside is they can be rather restrictive, so you wouldn’t want to work out or get down on the dance floor with one of these on.
A cincher works similarly to a trainer, but there are a few key differences. While many products are listed with both terms, you can expect two key departures with a cincher. These models tend to be shorter in length than a full trainer. They don’t reach as far into the under-bust area. Instead, they work around your middle, and let your breasts sit naturally.
They also use plastic ribs, which are a bit more forgiving than the steel struts in a full trainer. Overall, we’ve found that they’re a more flexible, forgiving option. However, they don’t provide bust support, and won’t give you quite as full a result as a trainer. We recommend them for casual exercise, and all-day wear around the house or at work.

They’re much easier to put on than a cincher or trainer, and they give you a lot more flexibility of movement.
We think they’re the best choice for people who are looking for something to wear to the gym. One downside: the straps on these models tend to stick out a bit more. So, if you’re trying to hide your trainer completely, you may want to go for a cincher.
Likewise, if you need something to wear under formal clothes, or on a date, a cincher will be a bit more discreet. Trimmers are your best friend for home days or trips to the gym. However, they won’t totally change your figure on their own. They’re better for people who are training their waist as part of their journey to getting in shape.

It’s a full-length trainer. That means it provides shaping from the under-bust area right down to the lower back and abdomen regions. We like full length models because they do more than just squeeze in your tummy: they provide full posture support, which teaches you to engage those core muscles and keep your back from slouching.
It uses a combination of latex and fabric. The latex creates strong, resilient compression. It also allows clothing to slide naturally around the corset without catching (as it would on fabric). The fabric on the inside keeps you comfortable, and prevents chafing.
The latex construction also helps to increase sweating and thermal activity around your abdomen and waist. Many people say this leads to added fat burning.
Unlike most other full-length models, this one has flexible boning. That allows for a more natural range of movement, and it also makes the corset comfortable for a wider range of body shapes. It’s like having an extended-length cincher.

It’s very inexpensive. Many previous buyers said in their reviews that they thought the Lush Moda was one of the most effective options in this price range that they’d ever used. They said that they especially liked the added value of being able to use the 3 different latch settings to make their purchase last even longer.
A few buyers reported bone supports which poked through the latex, and weren’t secured properly. This one seems to be mostly glued together, rather than sewn. With that said, most people didn’t have any issues.
We also found that some buyers said it felt like their trainers were stretching out over time. This one’s definitely not as durable as a steel corset, although many buyers actually complimented its reliability over other corsets they had used.
As with nearly any model, some users simply found the Lush Moda uncomfortable. Some buyers said the sizing seemed off, and some very tall users found that it wasn’t long enough, and caused rolls to form on their back. We’d say that the Lush Moda definitely runs on the smaller side, so if you’re between sizes, it’s probably a good idea to choose the larger option.
Overall this one definitely isn’t the highest quality model available. We think it provides great value, but it’s not as well-made or well-designed as the more expensive options. However, it makes a good starter option.
This Camellia’s model is a more traditional design than the Lush Moda. It features a full-length corset, reinforced with steel strutting for support. We like it because it incorporates many of the features we like on the Lush Moda in a more durable, effective design.
It’s sturdier than the Lush Moda. The Lush Moda is reinforced with plastic struts, which are designed to be more flexible than steel. However, they do tend to bend or buckle more than steel. This Camellia’s model has the stronger steel struts inside. They’re much safer than traditional bone or plastic, since they won’t snap.
The sturdier design means that the Camellia’s Classic gives you much firmer posture control and under-bust support than the Lush Moda. Unlike the cheaper model, it won’t buckle or create bubbles anywhere. Previous buyers said it produced almost instant results in both their posture and waist size.
It’s more comfortable to wear, and works better with your clothing. They’re both made with a latex layer, but the Camellia’s model sandwiches the latex between two fabric layers. The inner layer is a blend of cotton and spandex for comfort. The outer layer is nylon and spandex, so that your clothes slide around with no resistance.
Previous buyers said the Classic felt much better to wear than the Lush Moda. We didn’t find any reports of chafing, rashes or other discomfort, all of which were occasionally reported with the Lush Moda.
Just like the Lush Moda, the Camellia’s Classic has three rows of hooks, so that you can adjust the fit of it as you improve your figure. The adjustable system extends the working life of your trainer, and makes transitioning between sizes easier.
There are more than a dozen different colors and patterns to choose from. The Classic is available in a few plain options, like the Lush Moda, but it also gives you lots more room to express your own style.
You can also choose between zipper models and hooked models, so you can suit your own preferences.
Just as we found with the Lush Moda, some Camellia’s buyers thought their trainer was too tight, and needed to order up. Again, if you’re new to training, or hovering between sizes, it’s probably best to go with a larger size. The size chart recommends going one size above your normal, but most reviewers agreed that two sizes above normal was a better bet.
We found that even though the Camellia’s Classic is a more durable, resilient choice than the Lush Moda, there were still some quality control issues. A few reviewers said that their clasps broke off, and some others said that the steel struts bent. We found that most of the problems were due to people trying to make a trainer that was too small fit on their body. However, a few buyers did note that the clasps felt a bit weak for the price.
While this is a full-length corset by our standards, some taller women found it slightly too short. They found that it didn’t provide enough under-bust support for their needs.
This heavy-duty Camellia’s model is our top quality pick for a full-size trainer. It’s the longest of our recommendations, and the best made. It has laminated construction and steel bones for extra strength. We also like the elegant finishes, which look good enough to fit in with dressy and formalwear without shame. We think the Heavy Duty is the best you can do for a waist trainer without spending a ton!
It’s built heavier than our other recommendations. It has a 26-bone design, and all of the support pieces are made from steel. Like the other Camellia’s model, there are spiraled steel bones as vertical support. This heavy-duty model adds 4 rigid back support bars and 2 rigid bust support bars in front.
The heavy construction and key reinforcements make this the best choice for women who have a lot of flab to deal with, and need something that won’t cave or buckle at all. It’s also the best choice for women who want the most aggressive waist training approach, since it has very little give.
Since the Heavy Duty is so sturdy, it’s going to give you the most lasting results of our three recommendations. Previous buyers said they started seeing a much more distinct hourglass shape in the first few wears.
Like the Classic, the Heavy Duty has a 3-layer fabric design. The big upgrade here is that the layers on the Heavy Duty are actually laminated together. That makes them much stronger over the long term.
It’s the most elegant option here. This is more of a dress corset than the others. It’s available in satin, lace, and brocade finishes, which look good enough that you won’t have to worry about hiding this piece!
Even though it’s by far the most durable choice here, it’s not all that well-made. Some previous buyers reported issues with clasps breaking off, and some others said that the fabric wore out much faster than they would have liked. While it’s one of the best corsets out there, it doesn’t have quite the level of quality control we’d like to see. Again, most people who had issues were trying to cram into trainers that were sized too small.
You’ll need to size up. We’d recommend going up two sizes above your normal clothing size.
Since it’s the longest trainer we’re recommending here, it’s no surprise that some smaller-framed women found it a bit big. They said it pushed too hard into their bust or hips, and wanted something shorter.
While the lace-up system allows for a bit of flexibility in how much you tighten the trainer, it’s not as adjustable as the 3-row hooks on our other recommendations.
Top Rated Waist Trainer for Shorter Ladies
One common problem with full-size waist trainers is that they can protrude too much into the bust and hips when they’re used by shorter women. Cinchers and trimmers offer a shorter solution, but they’re not as sturdy or effective as a full waist trainer.
What’s a smaller gal to do? Well, we’ve done some research to make sure we could find a good corset option for smaller women. Our current favorite is the Camellia’s Short Torso model of the Heavy Duty trainer we just reviewed.
This model has most of the same features as the full-size Heavy Duty model, just in a smaller package. There are the same 26 steel bones, along the height of the piece, across the back, and under the bust. The garment’s body is made of the same 3-layer, laminated fabric combination, and it even comes with the same number of color and finish choices!
However, it’s 2-3 inches shorter than the Heavy Duty model, depending on the size. At 7 inches from hip to bust, it should be suitable for shorter gals without any excessive pressure at the edges. Overall, we found that the shorter version of the Heavy Duty actually received even more positive reviews from buyers than the full-size version. They complimented the strength of the steel boning, and the unobtrusive fit for their smaller frames. However, as with the full-length model, buyers recommended sizing up from the chart!
Which is the Best Waist Trainer to Buy?
The Lush Moda is the cheapest model here, so it’s the clear choice for people who are on a budget. Even though it’s cheap, it has a sturdier build than other budget models. We also like the extra working life provided by the 3 different fit settings.

Think about your body:
Before you make any decisions about your new waist trainer, take stock of where your body is, and where you want it to be. Think about whether you’ve got a longer or shorter torso than average, because that’ll narrow down your trainer options.
Consider your posture, and whether or not you need strong reinforcement to keep your back from slouching. One pro tip for all you ladies: no posture support is a total replacement for a good core workout! Back yourself up with a trainer, but make sure you’re practicing using your abs and glutes. You’ll tone your midsection, and save your back in the long run!
Visualize your goals, and make sure you talk to your doctor about what a realistic body shape can be for you. Think about how much curve you can achieve without causing discomfort or other symptoms to your midsection. Make sure you’re waist training in conjunction with exercise. Remember that while waist training will help you sculpt your figure, that excess flab won’t go anywhere by itself! Your doctor can help you get started with a workout routine, and refer you to local gyms or rec centers.
Once you’ve got a visual in your mind, start getting a sense of what that means in terms of clothing sizes and measurements. Know your current measurements, and get a sense of where you’d like to be in 6 months.
As a general rule, a waist trainer will take off a solid inch or more off your waistline the first time you put it on. You’ll then be able to work down from there. Make sure your waist trainer is adjustable, so you can tighten it down as you start to see results.
Keep it realistic:
Before you let your imagination run wild, it’s super important to make sure you don’t expect unrealistic results from a waist trainer. A waist trainer, used properly, can help take a couple inches off your waist size. However, if you’re not pairing it with an exercise routine, you’ll just be shifting the bulk elsewhere on your body. That’s not good for your body, and it’s not going to give you results that last when you’re not wearing your trainer.
Make sure you’re making active lifestyle choices to start burning off fat, and begin an exercise routine. You’ll also want to make some changes to your diet, to make sure you aren’t adding any more weight to the situation. Your doctor can help you make an all-around lifestyle plan.
One mistake we’ve seen over and over again is people starting their waist training regimen too aggressively. While we know it’s tempting to try and go all-out on the first day to see big results, make sure you give yourself some time to ease in. That’s important for both your body and your trainer. If you try to tighten up too fast, you can risk doing damage to your body, and you’ll probably snap the clasps off the corset.
We recommend that you start with a trainer that’s a bit on the looser side, so you can gradually work your way down to a tighter model. If you’re getting a trainer with multiple hooks for adjustment, start with the loosest setting.
You’ll want to give your body a couple days to adjust to the trainer before you start getting more aggressive. The constricting feeling of the corset, combined with the added heat it’ll produce around your midsection, can definitely take some getting used to.
